Former Governor of Lagos State and National Leader of
the Action Congress of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has begun a round
of consultations with members of the opposition, civil society and
pro-democracy groups and individuals in the country.
A source close to the ex-governor who was said to
have returned to the country this week, said in Lagos on Thursday that
he had also begun preliminary talks with the leadership of the party to
appraise the state of the nation.
According to the source, Tinubu will in the next two
weeks hold different levels of meetings with his party caucus members,
leaders of other prominent political parties, human rights community and
labour.
“This broad consultation is aimed at helping him
appraise himself fully the developments that took place while he was
away, afford him an opportunity to thank and solidarise with political
and civil society leaders that took part in the protest against subsidy
removal,” a source close to the party said.
Tinubu had, earlier in a piece published two weeks
ago in national dailies, during the nationwide protest against fuel
subsidy removal, flayed the Goodluck Jonathan administration for
breaking his social contract with the people by the abrupt removal of
subsidy on fuel.
The source further stated that some preliminary
consultations had commenced with the ACN governors, while Tinubu was
also expected to consult with political leaders in the North especially
group and individuals Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), and also
leaders of thought from the Middle Belt and parts of the south.
According to the source, other issues that will
dominate the consultations include a South-West agenda within the
Nigerian nation, the creation of a broad based coalition to halt the
violation of Nigeria’s constitution by the current government and an ACN
strategic plan for more political victory.
Meanwhile, ACN in Adamawa State chapter, has
protested against the spate of arrests and detention of its members and
those with sympathy to the party.
In a statement on Thursday by State Publicity
Secretary, ACN, Yohanna Mathias, the party accused the Governor Murtala
Nyako administration of putting in place a curfew regime that was
manipulated.
The statement said, “It is obvious that these arrests
of our members and sympathisers on claims of being in possession of a
document or documents is because of the government’s failure to secure
the support of the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct
the 2012 governorship election in Adamawa, under curfew.”
